Chapter 23

No! No, no, no! No fangs!

Thankfully, they seemed to obey my pleading and they retracted slowly. “These are the best cookies I’ve ever tasted.”

“You seem to really enjoy sweets, don’t you, dearie.”

I nodded. “Yes, ma’am.” That, and you know, vampire food.

“You liked those pies today, didn’t you?”

I stopped mid bite, my breath catching in my throat and my heart heaving in my chest. I did love those pies. They tasted like my childhood, warm and sweet. My cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

“You’ve still got some of those pies on your clothes, don’t you, dearie?” Granny pointed to my shirt, still covered in bright red cherry juice.

I shoved the remains of the cookie into my mouth and grabbed a third. “I didn’t have much time to change. Principal Petto made me stay and clean up my mess.”

“Of course, dearie. And you did it, didn’t you? Just like a nice little girl.”

My mouth was full of a third cookie. “Um, hum.”

“I suppose those clothes feel terrible,” Granny said.

My head nodded vigorously, excited that someone finally paid attention to me and understood. I took a gulp of milk, finally clearing my mouth of food. “Why yes, yes they do.” Instinctively, I tugged at my shirt, letting it hang in place, still soggy and sticky.

“Well, I think I have the perfect thing for that.” Granny inched her way out of the big chair, and hobbled out of the room, a blanket draped over her shoulder.

Noises sounded down the hall. Puffs of smoke billowed out into the living room. “This darned fireplace . . .” Granny said with a cough.

“Can I help you?” I called.

“No, no, dearie. Be there in a moment.” Even though Granny was in the other room and I couldn’t see her face, I could hear the smile in her voice.

A second later she returned with, a clean, crisp white blouse—nearly identical to my own—draped over her arm. “This should feel better.”

“Oh no, I couldn’t. My parents would never allow it.”

“Consider it a gift. From a lonely old lady to a sweet girl.”

A smile crept on my face. No one had ever shown me this much kindness. Not in my whole vampire life. In fact, most people ran the other way, especially when I exposed my fangs.

VAMPIRE RULE #70

Don’t show your fangs to your so-called friends. Ever. Even if you think they’d never tell, the whole school is going to know and before you know it, the old suckers will be packing up the house and moving to another town. Trust me. I know. Past experiences and all.

“Thank you.” Maybe it was wrong, but the old suckers didn’t need to know. I wiped my hands on a napkin and politely took the blouse from Granny.

“Bathroom is down the hall, to the right.”

I wandered through the small cottage—which seemed much larger on the inside than it did on the outside—until I reached the bathroom. My shirt was such a mess that I just dropped it on the floor as I changed into the clean one.
